Lent - The Message of Jesus

main image

The year’s season of Lent begins on March 5, Ash Wednesday, and goes thru April 17

Share in a special worship, tomorrow,

in the Old Chapel from 4:30 - 5:30 pm

Lent is a forty-day season of study, prayer, reflection, confession, and preparation for the celebration of Easter. This year, Easter falls on April 20, one of the latest calendar dates in the Paschal Cycle. Easter-observing Christians commonly refer to the week before Easter as Holy Week. Christian theology holds that, through faith in the working of God, those who follow Jesus are spiritually resurrected with him so that we may walk in a new way of life and can hope to be physically resurrected and receive eternal salvation.

Our Lenten series this year will feature The Message of Jesus, by Adam Hamilton, a six-week sermon and worship series that explores some of the most important themes in Jesus’s teachings, why they matter, and how they speak to us today. For the six Sundays of this series, worship will center on the following themes:

  1. The Kingdom of God Has Come Near
  2. The World’s Most Important Sermon
  3. Jesus Spoke to Them in Parables
  4. Who Do YOU Say that I Am?
  5. Final Words
  6. The Resurrection and the Life

More than three billion people claim to follow Jesus. But aside from a few verses, how many actually know what he taught? In fact, much of what people think Jesus taught, he never said. Through this series, we will explore Jesus’s preaching on the kingdom of God, the Sermon on the Mount, the parables, the “I am” sayings in John, the significance of Jesus’s words during his final days, and his teaching throughout the Gospels on heaven, the afterlife, and his own resurrection.

Copies of the book are available in the Atrium entrance area and a donation envelope is there to allow you to support this study material.

Read along, invite a friend or neighbor to share in worship, and pray that God will speak to us through The Message of Jesus.

We’ll be invited to consider what it means for us to live in ways that embody God’s kingdom today; find the ethical, missional, and spiritual road map meant to guide our lives as Christians; Jesus words that conveys profound insights through vivid analogies; highlights the seven “I am” statements found in the Gospel of John that point to different aspects of Jesus’s identity and mission; the teachings of Jesus in his final days; and Jesus’s final teaching came not through words, but through example – in His resurrection. Welcome to a season in which we desire to keep a holy Lent.

Pastor David
